Movie Review : Godzilla (2014)

Godzilla.The King of all Monsters.
But unfortunately,Indians think the shitty 1998 movie was the first and the only Godzilla (which has been aptly named "Zilla" by the fans since it was far from being "God") movie that ever exists. And if you ask any Indian as to what Godzilla is,chances are, they will give you answers resembling this - A dinosaur (*MASSIVE FACEPALM*)

Fortunately,Godzilla is back after a 10 year gap to prove them wrong.Godzilla 2014 is not licensed by Toho and is an American take on the King.As good as it sounds, and as good as the movie was,it has many, many problems.Jeremy Jahns,an internet movie reviewer, has EXACTLY mentioned what I felt,in his review. So if you have already watched it,then it may look like a repeat telecast.

Firstly, where the hell is Godzilla? I mean, the whole screen time for Godzilla, who apparently plays the lead role, appears in the movie like for about 20 minutes. And most of it was a tease.I expected it to be like Pacific Rim,where Titan-sized monsters duke it out with each other. But no,Godzilla comes in to save the day and just as he is,it jump cuts to the human side-story.

Most fans who liked the movie argued that that is why Godzilla movies were likeable in the first place. It is because of the human suffering during a crisis that moves us as an audience.I agree, but only to an extent.Classic Godzilla movies had enough human side-story AND Godzilla. That is why, many enjoyed it,even if it was a man in a sweaty rubber suit.

Even the side-story was not done properly.Bryan Cranston's acting was the best and he was the only relatable character in the entire movie, but before you know it,he is gone. Why is he shown in the trailers if he is not in the movie for long? It should have been a surprise cameo. The other lead actor is the guy who played 'Kick-ass'.Eventhough he tried his best,I didn't care for him even for one bit.

Now to the good parts - Godzilla, again. When he appears on screen,it was pandemonium. The famous roar, tearing out our eardrums was exciting as hell. The animation and character model was well done. And there was also the 'atomic breath' attack in one scene, which made us,the fans, happy.

Overall,I would say the movie was far from being bad.But it was also far from being good.It seems they have already planned a sequel. If this is the case in the sequel also,I think I will be settling with Toho's Godzilla classics.

Score - 7/10
