Finally, Venom has a face
My mind is simple. If it is DC, it's Batman. If it is Marvel, it was and always will be Venom (as if it is not evident from my quite frankly idiotic fan-fiction that I had previously posted here). That said, I don't know, for the life of me, how this news escaped my attention two days ago; Tom Hardy is Venom.
Yes, it's official. Now, there is good news and there is bad news with this er...news. The bad news is, I don't think he will be Hugh Jackman's successor in that other franchise (pfft, like anyone cares ;). The good news is I can't think of anyone else best suited for this role after they announced this. We last saw Topher Grace as Eddie Brock/Venom in Spider-Man 3. Though not a good Eddie Brock, I thought Venom's design was really cool. It was a shame that the character was wasted.
Tom Hardy, however, has proved himself in many other roles. I mean, the guy was Bane, he was Mad Max, he was considered the next James Bond at one point, and what's more, he is a self-confessed fan of Venom! What's better than some random actor playing Venom, is a true fan playing Venom who can understand the character from inside out. I confess, like many others, I wanted to see Brock Lesnar as Venom a few years ago. I mean, he is blonde, he is a beast and he is scary. But in retrospect, I don't think he is an "actor" actor. Yeah, he does some acting on WWE TV but that is not exactly "acting". After giving it some thought, I didn't think he could pull it off. So yeah, Hardy all the way.
Sony Pictures have confirmed that this franchise is not connected in any way to the Spider-Man franchise from the MCU for now. Hence, the R-rated Venom. I feel that they are going the route of Deadpool here. Like I had probably stated in one of my articles, I think Sony-Marvel is testing waters with this. They just want to see how the fans would accept it and if all goes well, I am quite sure they will connect this franchise with the MCU a la Netflix's Daredevil.
Also, this is going to be directed by the guy who directed Zombieland. Though not a fan of that movie, I thought it was good. Not great, but not bad either. Just good.
I also feel that they will not be stressing much on the origin of Venom. I think they would just brush through the origins story in the opening credits or through a short-film on Youtube or something and getting on with nitty and gritty... on second thought, that is a great idea! 'Venom: Origins' webisodes on Youtube. You heard it first here, folks! So if Sony/Marvel goes this direction, they better pay me!
I was stoked to hear this news this morning and I couldn't help but feel that this movie is going to taste somewhat like this widely acclaimed Venom fan-film on Youtube that I had watched a few years ago (the original video got flagged by Youtube due to a copyrights issue and lost its audio, so here is a link from Vimeo):
Also, feast your on this awesome fan-art released immediately after the announcement. THIS IS AWESOME!
Simply put, a great casting choice. First check-mark in the book. Plenty more to go. Now, if only they could bring in Cillian Murphy as Carnage...
